If you are going to the great outdoors with your dog, make sure you pack flea and tick repellent and medicine and extra water and towels. You may also want to pack a little First Aid Kit for dogs that includes:
Matches in a Ziplock bag. You can light a match, blow it out and use the hot tip to get a tick to back out of your dog’s skin.
Tweezers to pick up said tick or to pull out splinters or thorns.
Toenail scissors to cut away burrs or other things that stick to his fur.
Little packets of honey. Chihuahuas, in particular, can get low blood sugar if they don’t eat for a while and a little honey in their mouth or mixed in water can help him in case of emergency low blood sugar, but if he seems faint, bring him to the vet immediately.
Ace bandage and gauze. In case of a severe injury, these will be helpful, but only to help on your way to the vet.
Overall, when you travel, make sure you have plenty of water on hand. I can’t emphasize this enough. The traveling can be stressful and your pup might get dehydrated without you realizing it. So, make sure he keeps drinking. In addition to water, I like to give him yogurt shake or fresh carrot or apple juice as a special treat, but they are no substitute for water.
Traveling with your four-legged pal is a lot of fun but does take extra attention to details such as what items are on the floor in the hotel or on the ground outside that he may not recognize or what is the temperature in the room or the woods. What is comfortable to you isn’t always comfortable to him, so keep a watchful eye and have a blast!
