Since the John Marshall Hotel opened Oct 30, 1929, the hotel has hosted the rich and famous, as well as generations of Virginians and Richmond visitors. Spiro T. Agnew, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter have been guests, as well as Lawrence Welk, Elvis Presley, Vincent Price, Mary Tyler Moore and Elizabeth Taylor.

Many dignitaries have shared the ballroom floor with Richmonders and their guests in the Virginia Room, the main ballroom on the first floor, or the Roof Garden, the ballroom on the south wing of the 14th floor.

History’s touch appears throughout the hotel. Various meeting rooms are named for famous Virginians – Patrick Henry, the Monroe, Lee, Byrd and Washington Rooms, and The John Marshall.

Visit the John Marshall Hotel and take a walk through time. Surround yourself with history at nearby St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lee House, the Edgar Allen Poe House or Hollywood Cemetery, burial place for more than 10,000 Civil War dead and several presidents
