Travel Rituals for Women on the Move

Jun 3, 03:48 PM

Once I’m at the gate, I immediately look for one of the rare outlets located in the gate seating area. Since I’m not part of any of the executive flyer programs, I cannot partake in the very cushy lounge and work spaces in VIP areas. But I am sure to find an outlet by the gate because that is where the janitors plug in the vacuum cleaners. I look out for a post or column in the gate area, that is the most common spot for an outlet. I spend my waiting time on the computer or reading magazines.

On the Plane When I pack, I make sure I pre-pack an “On the Plane” bag within my carry-on bag. This is usually just a plastic bag where I put the following items:

1. Chewing gum

2. Snacks

3. Bottle of water (no larger than 25 ounces)

4. Hair clips, Hair ties

5. Hand and face lotion

6. Vitamins and Herbs

7. Toothpaste and toothbrush

8. Socks

9. Pens

When I get to my seat, I snag space overhead, put my “On the Plane” bag on my seat, shove my tote or computer bag under the seat, then begin the “Stuffing the Seat Pocket” routine. First I slide in my magazines, any random novel that I think I might read, and any reading material for work in front of the deplaning instructions and barf bag. Then I force the water bottle into the pocket on one side. Next, I have to do the “Plane Comfort Ritual” which consists of:

1. Putting gum in my mouth

2. Pulling my hair away from my face – flat barrettes and soft hair ties work best (no claw clips).

3. Moisturize my face thoroughly.
(Pre-boarding hint: You might want to slather some Vaseline or non-petroleum lubricating product up your nostrils—it really helps keep your nose from drying out in the horrible airplane air. Sounds gross but it works).

4. Drink about 1/4th of the water.
(Pre-boarding hint: Drink only water—no alcohol, no sodas. Get hydrated!)

5. Take off shoes and put on socks if I was wearing sandals or clogs sans socks.

6. Pull a pen out of the bag

Then I push the “On the Plane” bag into the pocket or if it doesn’t fit, I squish it under the seat but within easy reach. I clip the pen to the pocket for quick access. Then I proceed to grab the in-flight magazine and go straight to the crossword puzzle. I find that doing a puzzle takes my mind off of flying, which by the way, I hate to fly.
